This introductory session will give you an overview of brain development, the parts of the brain linked with trauma, trauma response and what this can lead to if not resolved. The course ends with advice around how you can support someone who has experienced trauma.

Session 1 : Brain Development
This session provides an overview of the areas of the brain and their related functions, in relation to the developmental changes that occur in our brains from conception and birth to adulthood.

Session 2 : The Limbic System
A detailed look at the structures in the brain that make up the Limbic system, with a focused look at the structures specifically involved in our trauma response.

Session 3 : Trauma Response
This session outlines a definition of psychological trauma and explores what happens in our brains and bodies when we experience a traumatic event(s). This session also looks at the evolutionary benefits of the trauma response and how this can lead to problems for humans in the modern age.

Session 4 : Signs and Symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
This session outlines the diagnosis criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as the signs and symptoms of PTSD and how these differ in children, young people and adults.

Session 5 : Ways you can support and help
This last session covers ways to find support if you, or someone you know may be experiencing PTSD, as well as outlining the treatment options for PTSD.
